A Journey to Likuliku Lagoon, Fiji

There’s something magical about hopping on a short flight across the South Pacific, where an island paradise awaits. We land in Nadi International Airport and head for the enchanting Malolo Island, Fiji — a place where turquoise waters, lush palms, and warm Fijian hospitality are only the beginning.

Arrival in Paradise

From Nadi, a scenic 40-minute boat ride delivers us to the idyllic Likuliku Lagoon Resort, a dreamy, adults-only escape where luxury meets sustainability. The scent of grilled seafood mingles with salt air as we approach a resort deeply connected to its land, sea, and people.

More Than a Resort: A Sustainability Leader

“Likuliku” means calm waters, but behind the serenity lies an active commitment to conservation. The resort’s dedicated environmental team is leading the charge in preserving the island’s natural and cultural heritage. From coral reef rejuvenation to solar-powered infrastructure, Likuliku has made sustainability more than a buzzword — it’s part of its DNA.

They’re even helping to protect one of Fiji’s rarest species — the Malolo Island iguana. Once thought nearly extinct, a breeding program started by the Likuliku team has given this shy reptile a second chance.

Eco-Luxury at Its Finest

Likuliku is home to Fiji’s first overwater bungalows, blending traditional design with local craftsmanship. Each spacious bure (villa) is adorned with artwork by Fijian artisans, creating an open-air feel that draws the outside in. Sunset cocktails on the deck bring nature even closer, as vibrant fish and curious baby sharks drift by in the crystal-clear lagoon.

Coral Gardening Underwater

Inspired by similar programs in the Maldives, the resort’s coral rejuvenation project is powered by science — and a surprising partner: Mars Inc. (yes, the chocolate company). Using large, sand-encrusted steel frames known as “spider webs,” the team creates coral beds that mimic natural reef environments, allowing damaged reefs to regrow and thrive.

Community Roots: Giving Back to Yaro Village

Sustainability at Likuliku extends beyond resort walls. A visit to nearby Yaro Village offers insight into Fijian life and the positive impact of tourism. The resort supports local infrastructure, including a solar-powered water filtration system and an education centre. We buy handcrafted beaded jewelry and coconut cups as souvenirs — perfect for our evening kava ceremony.

Parting with Purpose

As we check out, the Likuliku team offers guests a chance to make a lasting impact. Whether you choose to adopt an iguana or sponsor a coral web, it’s a heartfelt gesture to leave a piece of yourself in the sea garden below.

As the sun dips behind Malolo’s forested hills, we reflect on our time snorkelling off our deck, beachside fire feasts, and private island picnics — knowing the team here is preserving paradise for generations to come.
